SharePoint 2007 Site Import and Export -STSADM

While working in Migration project it could be a requirement to change the structure of the sites.  So What will you do. SharePoint 2007 now has great improvements.

You can use STSADM Import and Export command to get that.  You can find more information and step by step guide from below.

A Critical Update to Prepare for Upgrade Test Machine

I was sitting in office while tweaking the test environments for my team for the test migration cycles.  We until now have run over 120 Test cycles for our projects.  The success ratio for the success is 1:4 which is not very good but we are still learning as our portal has over 1500 webs in one site collection :).  But any way lets not get away for the original task.

While I was preparing the test machines for the migration one error message became my friend when I try to run the SharePoint 2003 Backup and restore.  The error message was something like this

The Database schema you wanted to restore is too old to perform this operation.  Restore Failed.

I wasted some time finding solution to that but there is nothing on the web on this.  So finally I decided to do some thing I never did before. I opened Microsoft Update site and click Custom download button.  I saw a Knowledge base update there KB924881.  I download it and believe me the DB restore worked fine.  While making a new machine for our first Dev Test.  I confirmed it by downloading the Patch and installing it (Got the same error when I run without patching it).  The link to the download is given below.

Specially update you computer with this update.

An Interesting Issue after Migration of SPS to MOSS 2007

On last weekend my team was able to migration a full SharePoint Portal Server 2003 implementation (15 GB DB Size) to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.  The major challenge in that project was that all the portal was 100% Customized with 22 Site Definitions, 20+ Webparts and 100% reconditioned UI.  We have to work hard really which we at the end did and are successful.  But today I want to share a thought here about Security Migration.

After the migration of the portal I accessed the portal Users and Groups page from Site actions tab.  The old groups that are migration from the portal are given custom ; where an=1 naming convention which means that I have go and manfully update the users groups according to Microsoft Office SharePoint server user and groups which seems interesting to me.  As SharePoint 2007 groups names are changed but still the migrated groups and not given the same name.

Another issue that we faced is adding a user with full control will not give the users full rights on the server.  We have to manually move the user to new SharePoint 2007 group that it will have all the permissions on the portal.

Looking forward for some guidance.

Regards,

Jerry
